Leukemia is a type of cancer in the blood or the bone marrow where the blood cells are produced. The blood cells produced from the marrow divide rapidly at an abnormal rate, especially the white blood cells (leukocytes).
There are four general types of leukemia: acute, chronic, lymphocytic and myelogenous.
Acute leukemia is a disease where the cells divide more rapidly when they are less mature, where as in chronic leukemia, the cells don't divide as quickly, and allow more mature cells to be made.
Lymphocytic leukemia is a disease where the cancerous transformation occurs in the lymphocyte, which are white blood cells located in your vertebrae immune system. Myelogenous leukemia happens when the marrow cells which produce red blood cells, white blood cells and the platelets are damaged.
Some common types of leukemia are acute lymphocytic leukemia, which are more common among young children or adults over the age of 65; chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which are said to be incurable, and usually affects men over the age of 55; and acute myelogenous leukemia, where patients, mostly adult male, are cured through chemotherapy.
